Oppose the anaconda mine

Our allies at the Great Basin Resource Watch (GBRW) are working hard at this site and many other mine sites throughout Nevada. Visit their website for more information and to get involved!

“The historic Anaconda Copper Mine Site (Site) is an abandoned open pit copper mine and processing facility, located in Lyon County’s Mason Valley, in western Nevada. The majority of copper mining, milling and processing at the Site occurred between 1953 and 1978, and secondary milling and processing of ores occurred between 1978 and 2000.”

On July 31, 2017, the State of Nevada Department of Environmental Protection (NDEP) sent a formal “Request for Deferment” to the US EPA Region 9 for the Anaconda Mine near Yerington, Nevada not to be placed on the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL).  This is a dramatic development in the long history of attempted cleanup of this toxic, abandoned mine.  Under deferment the site will not receive funds from the federal Superfund program and the State of Nevada would assume lead agency control and responsibility for the cleanup process.

Possible Land sale

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is proposing the selling of 2,062 acres of public lands including the mineral estates to Atlantic Richfield Corporation (ARC) in and around the abandoned Anaconda mine site in Lyon County, NV.  Atlantic Richfield Corp (ARC) is the “responsible party” as defined under the Superfund Law and required to cleanup the mine site with the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection (NDEP) as the lead agency overseeing the Anaconda Mine Superfund Site.  Four years ago BLM announced on December 11, 2020 this proposed land sale, and there was a 30 day  scoping comment period.  Now, after four years of quiet this land sale is reappearing with BLM releasing an Environmental Assessment (EA) on December 20, and a 30 day comment period.”
